Déplissage: A series

This group of prints is part of a larger series of monotypes I worked on for close to three years. I completed this series in 1999. The theme, Déplissage, (to unfold), began as my response to a story told by my father while we were travelling together. The back of the seated figure and the unfolding of the napkin initially served as the story's key visual elements. As I continued to work with the image, I found new interpretations and through repetition—a deeper understanding of the story. The figure became more of a witness to the unfolding and the napkin disappeared to be replaced by other symbols—ropes and knots—adding another layer to the story. Words and bits of phrases also found their way into the image serving both as graphic imagery and as narrative to inform the context of the image. Finally, this series is about working through an idea and telling a story visually until there is no more to tell. To see more of these prints and/or to get prices on framed and unframed pieces, please contact me through email.
